Q. Mr. Capp,

I am trying to find out if new ordeal members that have been inducted in the summer of 2015 are eligible for the Arrowman Service Award. Footnote one says:

"Arrowmen who were inducted as an Ordeal member after January 1st, 2015 are exempt from this requirement and need to complete only one requirement in Personal Growth."

My question is specifically about the "Scout service" section where it requires that the Scout "serve in a unit leadership position for a minimum of six months". Since new Ordeal members coming in during 2015 are typically tapped-out and inducted over the summer, their unit leadership for six months will necessarily involve time just prior to their ordeal induction. We presume that footnote-1 implies these new 2015 members must be eligible to begin with, and so that leadership may have come anytime in the overall qualification window.

So the bottom line question is: Can Ordeal members inducted after January 1st, 2015 qualify for the award, especially given that their Ordeal inductions typically occur in the summer of 2015?

Thanks and most sincerely,

David

A. Hello David,

Yes, Ordeal members inducted this year are eligible to earn the Arrowman Service Award. The award’s earning period is July 16th, 2014 – December 31st, 2015 and it is our opinion that new Ordeal members can count requirements completed during the earning period (even if it is prior to becoming an Arrowman).  With that said, we have left final interpretation regarding specific requirements to your lodge adviser.

Thank you for your interest in the Arrowman Service Award and promoting it to new Ordeal members.
