Q. Dear Ray,
I was told today by a member of our lodge that the National Order of the Arrow Committee has made a decree that 2-piece (full pocket) lodge flaps are no longer allowed to be worn on the BSA field uniform. Is this true?
I have been wearing a full pocket flap for many years and up until today no one has ever told me that I was wearing it "illegally". If you could please shed any light on this for me I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
David
A. Dear David,
Thank you for reaching out regarding lodge pocket flap patch guidelines. Here are a few thoughts:
In 2007, the National Order of the Arrow Committee released Operations Update 07-8 to clarify its policies on lodge pocket flap patches. The revised policy directs that "pocket flap patches be made of, and embroidered on, cloth, and must be of a size and shape so as to cover the right breast pocket flap and not extend beyond the outer edge of the uniform pocket flap."
While the policy revision makes it clear that lodges may no longer produce pocket flap patches that extend beyond the outer edge of the uniform pocket flap, it does not restrict lodges from producing two-piece lodge flaps sets. The two-piece sets comply with the guidelines as long as:
- they are made in two separate pieces - the flap patch and the pocket patch.
- the parts of the patch set could be worn independent of each other.
- the flap patch stayed within the boundaries of the uniform pocket flap
I certainly understand the sentimental value and humble pride that you find in the pocket flap patch that you currently wear. When it comes time to replace your uniform shirt, I hope that you will find a special place to cherish it, and on your next uniform shirt, proudly wear your lodge's current standard pocket flap patch.
Thanks again for reaching out. I hope to meet you on the trail this year.
Ray
