During the summer of 2012, Unami Lodge experienced a tragedy with the death of Steve Ranjo, an adviser who was actively involved. In memoriam, Unami Lodge and the associated Cradle of Liberty Council worked together to construct a clock tower at their council camp, Resica Falls Scout Reservation. The tower was dedicated to Steve at the recent lodge fellowship, and only represents a small token of appreciation from the lodge to a loved Scouter. Steve left a lasting legacy in the Order of the Arrow program, and it was only right that the lodge remember him incredible work.
Ranjo was a Life Scout from Troop 499 in the old Philenape District, ascending through the camp staff ranks from clerk to camp director at Treasure Island Scout Reservation. As a youth, Ranjo served as the lodge chief of Unami Lodge, as a section chief, received the Vigil Honor and Founder's Award, and later served as the lodge adviser. For the past twenty years, he served his camp in roles such as the assistant camp director and business manager of Resica Falls Scout Reservation. In 2011, he was selected to serve as the council's vice president of program.
Ranjo has impacted the lives of many youth and adults during his time in the Order of the Arrow. Mark Chilutti, Northeast Region OA Chairman, worked with the Cradle of Liberty Council and Unami Lodge in an effort to raise money for this major project. On October 5th, at the lodge fellowship, members of the lodge and family members gathered to dedicate the clock tower to Ranjo. Mike Coyne, Cradle of Liberty Council camping chairman, recounts Steve's impact on Scouting: "I don't think there is another Scouter in recent history who has more positively and directly affected the lives of Scouts in the Cradle of Liberty Council. Steve was the most unselfish person I have ever known - he never focused on himself but spent all his efforts on what needed to be done."
The clock tower at Resica Falls Scout Reservation may tell time, but is also commemorates a time when a loved Scouter and adviser was with Unami Lodge and the Cradle of Liberty Council. While Ranjo may be gone, the journey with him does not end. His spirit will continue to guide the leaders of the lodge and council, and every single youth or adult will be thankful for his efforts to better Scouting for all.
