Service Ideas


The Order of the Arrow (OA) has always placed a special emphasis on service, and the OA is known as Scouting's National Honor Society. During the 1999 National Leadership Summit, several workshops were conducted in an effort to collect service project ideas from the lodge representatives in attendance. The following list is a modernized version of their suggestions of how members members of the OA can serve their units, districts, councils, and the community.

Unit Level

  • Help recruit new Scouts
  • Help with Scout advancement
  • Plan a First-year Scout orientation/advancement program
  • Teach young scouts about Winter camping safety
  • Assist with Patrol Leader Councils
  • Work with membership retention
  • Lead a membership drive
  • Participate in teaching Leave No Trace and Tread Lightly programs
  • Participate in Arrow of Light ceremonies
  • Participate in crossover ceremonies
  • Training youth leaders
  • Lead Scout skills training
  • Run special programs for troop meetings
  • Run your unit Den Chief Program
  • Help out at an Eagle Court of Honor
  • Teach youth through a Bike Safety Clinic
  • Put on a Scout Sunday project or event

Council/District Level

  • Assist with district dinner
  • Help develop training manuals
  • Serve as a commissioner
  • Create a database of previous Eagle Scout projects
  • Facilitate Friends of Scouting (FOS) presentations
  • Provide camping supplies to new/under-privileged units
  • Serve on the district camping committee
  • Host a merit badge fair/college
